Typhoon No. 10 40% of local governments have shelters over capacity Cabinet Office survey September 24, 6:19

In Typhoon No. 10, which approached Japan earlier this month, the issue was that residents could not enter the evacuation centers in various places due to the effects of the measures against the new coronavirus.

When the government surveyed more than 200 municipalities such as Kyushu, it was found that about 40% of local governments answered that there were evacuation centers that exceeded the capacity.

The Cabinet Office investigated the situation of evacuation centers at that time, targeting 236 municipalities in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture, where Typhoon No. 10 was approaching.

As a result, 40% of 100 municipalities answered that there were evacuation centers that exceeded the capacity, citing that the capacity was reduced due to measures against the new coronavirus infection.

Regarding the response of evacuation shelters when the capacity is exceeded, they answered that they set up a new space in the evacuation shelters and introduced other evacuation shelters.

In addition, in 81 municipalities, some residents voluntarily evacuated to hotels and inns, and some local governments said that many residents said that the hotels were full and reservations could not be made.

The Cabinet Office reminds local governments to consider various evacuation destinations, including safe acquaintances' homes, informs residents of the congestion status of evacuation centers on the Internet, and shares usage status with hotels and inns. We are calling for efforts to prevent the concentration of evacuees.

On the other hand, even if the capacity of the evacuation center is exceeded, we are calling on people to avoid introducing other evacuation centers in bad weather and take safety-conscious measures.
