More and more Dutch people are switching to electric driving. Logical: electricity is a lot cheaper than gasoline and also much less harmful to the environment and climate. What exactly are the 'green' benefits of an electric car?

An earth without cars is unimaginable. In 2018, global production declined slightly compared to record year 2017, but 70 million new copies of the assembly line were still rolling. This abundance benefits consumers, but is bad news for the environment and climate.

Fossil fuels such as gasoline, diesel and gas emit greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Electricity is the most obvious alternative to reduce the negative effects of traffic. But why are electric cars actually better for the environment and the climate?

Electric driving is cleaner

Electricity is by far the least harmful fuel. A fully electric car produces no CO2 while driving. This does happen when generating electricity for the electric motor, but when using gray electricity, the CO2 reduction is still around 50 percent compared to gasoline.

What is sometimes overlooked is that much more CO2 is released when producing plug-in cars than when building cars with a combustion engine. This is because the production of a battery requires a lot of energy. On the other hand, an electric car is much more energy efficient during its entire lifespan than a car that runs on fossil fuels.

Electric cars are healthier

The gases that are released during the combustion of fossil fuels have negative consequences not only for the health of the planet, but also for that of humans. Electric driving can contribute directly to cleaner air, especially in the city and along busy roads. Moreover, since electric motors operate almost silently, noise pollution is reduced.

In the ideal picture, every electric car will soon run on green electricity from your own charging station, generated by the solar panels on your own roof. A closed system in which CO2 is only released during the production of the 'hardware'. With every electric car, that future scenario comes a step closer and could just become a reality within a few years.
