Soldiers and police from more than 40 countries in Europe and the Americas seized 145.3 tons of cocaine during the eighth phase of Operation Orion, a naval operation against drug trafficking.

This was announced by the Colombian navy on Monday.

It is the largest batch of cocaine seized during the operation.

In October and November of this year, 49 ships, six submarines and three aircraft were shut down.

Approximately 575 people of different nationalities have also been arrested.

In addition to cocaine, 66 tons of marijuana were also intercepted.

More than 545 tons of cocaine and 224 tons of marijuana have been seized since Operation Orion started in 2018, the Colombian Navy said.

Despite the fight against drug trafficking, Colombia remains a top producer of cocaine worldwide.

The country is under constant pressure from the United States to reduce the cultivation of coca, the main ingredient of the drug, as well as the production of cocaine.

Argentina, Belize, France and Suriname, among others, have participated in the eighth phase of operation Orion,
