Extra temporary emergency shelter for asylum seekers is being arranged in the asylum seekers' center (azc) Winterswijk and in the South Holland municipalities of Rotterdam, Vlaardingen, Nissewaard and Krimpen aan den IJssel.

The Gelderse village may be expanded by one hundred extra places.

The province of South Holland can accommodate dozens of people on ships and other small-scale locations.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) is currently looking for many reception places to receive asylum seekers from Afghanistan, among others, due to an acute shortage of reception places.

Many places in the asylum seekers' centers of the COA are still 'occupied' by status holders (refugees with a residence permit).

They are waiting for permanent housing in Dutch towns and villages.

Mainly families housed in Winterswijk

According to the Municipal Executive, a hundred extra reception places can be realized relatively quickly at Winterswijk asylum seekers' centre.

The extension is until 31 October 2022 at the latest.

A maximum of four hundred asylum seekers can now be accommodated in the asylum seekers' center.

The extra places for emergency shelter will be located in two vacant housing blocks that the COA will rent.

The municipality has agreed with the COA that mainly families will be housed in emergency shelters and that there will be sufficient money for education.

Municipalities of South Holland want shelter on cruise ships

The South Holland municipalities of Rotterdam, Vlaardingen, Nissewaard and Krimpen aan den IJssel want to arrange temporary accommodation on river cruise ships and other small-scale locations for fifty to seventy people.

The municipality of Rotterdam can accommodate ninety people on a larger ship.

The exact numbers of people who can be accommodated and the locations where that happens are not yet known.

The care is for a maximum of two months.

The COA has indicated that sufficient reception capacity will be available again after these two months.
