Warning to residents of Bunde: put cars away

The South Limburg Safety Region calls on people in Bunde to drive their cars to higher places. This concerns people who live near the river Geul. This is rising quickly, because the high water wave is advancing from Valkenburg towards Meerssen and Bunde, according to the security region. The highest water level in the Geul is expected in Meerssen and Bunde on Thursday morning around 11 a.m. and 12 noon.

The car owners are urgently advised to put their car on the handbrake once it has been moved to safer places. This reduces the risk of vehicles drifting away during high water.

People who live in the area are also advised to move their belongings to higher floors, in case the water reaches their homes.

It is also advised to tie the curtains on the ground floor.

Situation in Hoensbroek 'reasonably' under control

The situation in Hoensbroek appears to be reasonably under control this morning, a spokesperson for the South Limburg Security Region reported.

On Wednesday evening, the municipality pointed out to residents of the lower parts of the Heerlen district that they had to take into account significant flooding, because a large water basin filled with 120,000 cubic meters of water was about to break through.

On Wednesday evening, soldiers helped to prop up the water basin and fill sandbags to strengthen the water buffer.

Water was also pumped from the buffer, so that the pressure on the edges has decreased, according to the spokesperson for the security region.

"The chance of it breaking through has therefore become a lot less."

Train traffic in part of Belgium flat

After severe storms, the Belgian rail manager Infrabel has halted train traffic in the south of the country.

“This disruption to rail traffic allows emergency services to focus on urgent relief for everyone affected,” said Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet.

Infrabel CEO Benoît Gilson says the measure is necessary because of the incidents that took place during the night due to the heavy rain.

Trains that are still running may be delayed in many places.

Water level in major rivers rises further than expected

The water level in the major rivers Rhine, Waal and IJssel is higher than expected on Wednesday.

Rijkswaterstaat and the water boards think that the Rhine near Lobith will reach a highest level of more than 14.5 meters above NAP on Monday and possibly rise even further after that.

On Wednesday, Rijkswaterstaat was still thinking of a highest level of between 12 and 13 meters above NAP.

The high water is mainly caused by huge rain showers in the Rhine basin in Germany.

The water level in the rivers was already high because it rained a lot in the last month.

Four hundred households in Valkenburg have to look elsewhere.

About four hundred households in Valkenburg that are without electricity as a result of the high water have to look for shelter elsewhere. Grid operator Enexis is unable to solve the problem in the short term.

According to a spokesperson for the security region, the connections can only be restored when the water has completely disappeared. "And that can take days," he said. Until then, people are urgently advised to seek shelter with family, friends or acquaintances.

Enexis previously reported that a power outage was also caused by the high water in Valkenburg.

As a result, according to Enexis, 374 households are without electricity.

"We are currently investigating when we can restore this," Enexis said on Twitter at around 1.30 am.

Dryer in Limburg for

the next few hours It will be slightly

drier in Limburg in

the coming hours, but it could rain again later in the day.

The center and east will also have to deal with heavy rainfall.

In many places 20 to 40 millimeters fall in 24 hours, locally more than 50 millimeters can fall.

This can lead to hindrance from traffic and outdoor activities.

Because a lot of rain has already fallen in Limburg, there is again an increased risk of flooding.

"Today's problems are mainly caused by the drainage of water, and that problem has not been solved so quickly," weatherman Peter Kuipers Munneke said on Wednesday evening in the NPO Radio 1 program
