The lawyers say they have never doubted.

"Nabil has clearly said that he wants us to continue," said Schouten.

"Onno and I had already decided that, and we also knew from our client that he was combative."

Peter R. de Vries, who was shot in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening, is Nabil B.'s confidant and advisor in the process.

De Vries has been seriously injured in hospital since the attack.

Earlier, B.'s lawyer Derk Wiersum and brother Reduan B. were shot dead.

Schouten and De Jong had therefore discussed the scenario of an attack on one of them in the presence of De Vries.

"Then we said: 'If this happens to one of us, the other wants us to continue'. We do not want to give way. That has always been the position of Peter R. de Vries throughout his life," says Schouten .

De Jong says that he no longer has to ask himself the question about continuing, "because we are in this situation and there is no going back".

"This is what we have to deal with and that's what we do. Moreover, if I were to stop tomorrow, the security wouldn't be completely gone either. So that doesn't change the situation."
