An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 was registered in the Groningen village of Loppersum in the night from Friday to Saturday.

According to the KNMI, the quake happened around 1.30 am at a depth of 3 kilometers.

Residents wrote on social media that they felt the quake.

There are no reports of damage yet.

It is the second quake in Loppersum in a month.

On May 17, another earthquake with a magnitude of 1.4 occurred.

A total of six quakes were recorded last month, with magnitudes ranging from 0.3 to 1.4.

The earthquakes in the region are caused by years of gas extraction.

The heaviest earthquake to date occurred in August 2012 in the hamlet of Huizinge (in the then municipality of Loppersum).

It had a strength of 3.6.
