An armed gang has kidnapped 317 schoolgirls in northwestern Nigeria, the Nigerian police reported Friday afternoon.
Earlier it was announced that the gang had raided the boarding school in the state of Zamfara just after midnight.
Witnesses have already stated that it involved hundreds of girls, and that number is now being confirmed by police.
According to a father of one of the girls and a teacher, the armed men took some children on foot.
Others were taken in cars.
Earlier this month, dozens of schoolboys were kidnapped in the country. They have not yet been released. Muslim extremists from Boko Haram and associated local groups kidnap children from schools on a regular basis.
