The lower house of the Russian parliament, the Duma, has ratified the five-year extension of the New Start nuclear disarmament treaty.

It was already said yesterday that Russia and the United States had agreed in principle to extend the validity.

The matter came to light after the new US President Joe Biden had spoken on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The new extension of the Start contract came at the last minute, as the contract signed in 2010 would have expired on February 5, next Friday.
