New variant coronavirus abundant in London

The new variant of the coronavirus that has emerged in the United Kingdom has quickly become the most common variant in London and the east of England.

The British statistics bureau ONS has calculated that the new mutation on December 9 already accounted for 62 percent of all new corona infections in the British capital.

In East England, 59 percent of all cases of the mutated coronavirus were diagnosed on that date.

The numbers show how quickly the mutated version of the virus is spreading.

On November 18, this corona variant, which first appeared in England in September, accounted for only 28 percent of the reported cases in London.

Mutations of a virus are more common.

Often they are not immediately problematic, which is why no immediate action was taken when the variant was found in laboratories.

The mutated version was also found in the Netherlands earlier this month, the cabinet announced in the night from Saturday to Sunday.

To prevent spread, there has been a flight ban from the United Kingdom to the Netherlands since Sunday morning.

The British government has declared a very strict lockdown for a large area, including all of London, which hampers the Christmas plans of millions of people.

Rules have also been tightened for the rest of the country.

Brussels Airport: No flights from the United Kingdom diverted

Brussels Airport will not notice the Dutch ban on flights from the United Kingdom on Sunday morning.

According to a spokesman for Belgium's main airport, no flights have yet been diverted.

It is possible that passengers who had the Netherlands as their destination will have to divert to the airport in Zaventem.

Brussels Airport is open to air traffic from the United Kingdom.

Travelers therefore have the option of booking a flight from London to Brussels.

The Dutch entry ban only applies to aircraft.

Traveling by car, boat or train is still possible.

The Netherlands, together with other EU countries, wants to see how the import of the mutated virus can be further limited.

Record number of infections in South Korea

In South Korea, 1,097 new corona

infections

have been identified in the past 24 hours.

Never before has the number of new cases been so great within 24 hours.

Some of the new infections are the result of a corona outbreak in a prison in the capital Seoul.

This concerns 185 infections.

It is the fifth day in a row on which more than a thousand infections have been detected.

Because of the outbreaks of contamination, the country fears that there are too few hospital beds.

South Korea has been an international example thanks to an aggressive testing policy at the start of the pandemic.

While other countries went into lockdown, South Korea managed to keep the number of new infections in check.

The corona virus has been diagnosed in South Korea - a country with more than 51 million inhabitants - in almost 50,000 people so far.

647 people in the country have died from COVID-19.
