Lasse Kukkonen, who finished his career last season, returned to the pitch for one game when Kärpät faced KooKoo in the Finnish Hockey League on Saturday.
Kukkonen did not want to end his games in the interrupted corona season, but he wanted to wear the Kärppie jersey once more in the first home game of the season.
The club advertised Kukkonen to be “in good condition for four minutes,” but the defense game specialist played with his own strengths as if the career had never ended.
The flies released a stylish video in honor of Kukkonen:
At the end of the match, Kärpät defended their 3–1 lead, and Kukkonen played in a familiar style on the field for the last minutes.
The audience gave their hero applause from their stand.
After the game, the iconic player of the Flies was honored with relevant expenses.
- A pretty special day.
I want to thank the club for getting me this day.
A big thank you also to the family in the auditorium, to the beloved wife Piritta and the children, 39-year-old Kukkonen said in her emotional thank you speech.
The flies team wanted to win the game to their longtime captain.
The 3-1 lead kept until the end.
- Now it's good to close the locker room door, go to the stands and enjoy hockey differently than before.
