The leading virologist says in a reaction to the Dutch figures that the Netherlands is "going in the wrong direction".

According to Fauci, who is not in favor of masks, the Netherlands would do well to motivate citizens to wear masks.

Face masks are just as important as other ground rules against the spread of the coronavirus, including keeping your distance and washing hands regularly, according to the director of the US National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.

The top virologist states that enough information indicates that face masks are very beneficial in the fight against the corona virus.

"Regardless of the country, I would advise people to seriously consider wearing masks to prevent transmission," he says in

Jaap van Dissel, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control of the RIVM, says that the RIVM does not see any evidence based on scientific data to recommend the wearing of non-medical face masks.

In addition, non-medical mouth masks would not be necessary if everyone adhered to the basic rules.

"I would ask him to study the rapidly growing amount of data on the importance and effectiveness of mouth masks," Fauci replies when asked what he would say to Van Dissel.

Trump's adviser himself was initially against wearing mouth masks, but is now convinced that they do have an effect in combating new infections.
