The passenger plane of the airline Air India Express was involved in a serious accident in India at Kozhikode Airport in the state of Kerala in South India on Friday.

The plane coming from Dubai derailed during the landing and broke in half. It rained heavily on the ground at the time of landing.

By late Friday night, local police had confirmed seventeen people had died in the collision. Authorities say there are two pilots of the plane among the victims.

According to local authorities, at least 89 people have been admitted to hospitals in the area, of which at least fifteen have serious injuries.

Dozens of ambulances are still fetching passengers to hospitals, and the final number of injuries is not yet known.

- We are afraid that the number of victims will rise. The rescue operation has been completed, local police Abdul Karim told AFP news agency.

191 people on the plane

According to the first data, there were at least 185 people in the plane, but the exact number is apparently 191. The uncertainty was partly due to the fact that there were some babies in the plane who are not marked as passengers in the same way as adults.

The airline itself reported 174 passengers, 10 infants, two pilots and five cabin crew members on board.

The television images shot in the field showed how the machine had broken in half, but it did not appear to have caught fire. According to one television channel, there would have been problems with the plane's landing gear, but the authorities have not confirmed this.

According to Indian aviation authorities, the plane failed to stop on its second attempt to land and slipped over the runway end. From there it fell ten meters into the lower valley and split into two parts.

According to the BBC, this was a government-organized flight to repatriate Indians from Dubai due to existing travel restrictions.

At least 17 have died, but the number of victims is feared to rise.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter.

- My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. Authorities will provide all possible assistance on the spot, Modi wrote.

The last major plane crash in India occurred in 2010 when an Air India Express plane flying from Dubai to Mangalore drove past a runway and caught fire. 158 people died in the accident.

Pictures taken from the crash site show how the machine has split in two. The field had bad weather at the time of the accident.
