The alcohol tax can be raised as early as next year. Minister of Finance Matti Vanhanen (center) tells BTI that the tax increase outlined in the government program will be decided in the autumn budget debate.
The tax increase is, in practice, a decision that can be prepared quickly, so it could enter into force as early as next year. According to Vanhanen, the budget debate will decide on the schedule for the increase.
Last summer, Estonia reduced its alcohol tax by 25 percent. According to the National Institute for Health and Welfare, passengers brought more soft drinks and less spirits to Finland last year.
