Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has assured after the recent increase in new corona infections that no critical threshold has been exceeded in Germany. "At the moment we are in any case still on a scale with which the health care system and the public health service can handle," said the CDU politician in the ZDF- Today Journal . For example, there are sufficient intensive care beds at the moment.

"If we stabilize at a certain level now, we can deal with it. If the numbers continue to increase, it is important for all of us to pay attention to each other in everyday life and to make additional measures unnecessary," said Spahn .

When asked when new restrictions would become necessary, Spahn said there was no "one number to which everything can be reduced". "There is the increase factor - so how much more dynamic is the infection process? There is the absolute number of infections. The healthcare system can handle around 1,000 new infections per day."

Spahn once again pointed out that, if the worst comes to the worst, regional measures are the main focus. The recent increase in infection is due to many small occasions. This included celebrations or religious gatherings, but also certain work processes, such as in slaughterhouses.

Test return for return travelers from Saturday

Most recently, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had registered more than 1,000 new infections within 24 hours for the first time in three months. A few days earlier, RKI President Lothar Wieler spoke of an alarming development.

The increased number of infections coincides with the start of school in several federal states and with the return of holidaymakers, some of whom have stayed in risk areas. For holidaymakers who come to Germany from corona risk areas, a test obligation applies from Saturday. In the ZDF interview, Spahn also referred to people's will to be tested. This gives them some security, said the Federal Health Minister.
