North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has canceled a visit to the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos for security reasons. Laschet had first visited the container area. The subsequent visit to the so-called wild part outside the camp was canceled on the advice of the local security chief.
Groups of refugees from Afghanistan and Africa had gathered and chanted " free Moria ". The prime minister was shielded from a strong security force.
The reception center on the Greek island was built in 2015 on an earlier military facility. It is the largest refugee camp in Europe and overcrowded with more than 14,000 people accommodated there - the camp is designed for 2,700 people.
After his visit to Moria, Laschet drove to the Kara Tepe camp. About 1,300 people are there. The camp is considered a "showcase". The visit there was initially without incident.
