The author recently said on Twitter that he had kept his promise made during the past year after his resignation to donate a large portion of his wealth to charity. In the same update, he said he changed his last name to Scott to honor his grandfather.
The promise MacKenzie signed after his resignation refers to the Giving Pledge movement, which encourages the world’s richest people to donate their wealth to charity. The initiative for this once came from Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010. To date, the movement has already involved more than 200 parties, either entire families or individuals.
Compared to many other billionaires, Bezos has so far sparingly donated money to charity. According to the BBC, his largest donation before this was reportedly “only” $ 2 billion, or just over € 1.8 billion, which he donated in 2018 to support homeless families and fund schools.
Even some Amazon workers have called for Bezos to become more involved in the fight against climate change.
