Berlin (dpa) - At the start of the tennis invitation tournament in Berlin's Steffi Graf stadium, Jan-Lennard Struff left the quarterfinals. The German number two from Warstein lost 3: 6, 6: 3, 7:10 against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
Struff started strongly and led 3-1 against last year's Wimbledon semi-finalists. After that, the twelfth-ranked player was better prepared for Struff's powerful game in the grass match.
The Warsteiner was able to equalize the set after the break to 4: 2 in the second round and was only defeated after a match tie break after 1:10 hours. In the previous week, the world ranked 34th still contested a show tournament like the Spaniard on sand in Kitzbühel. At lunchtime, only a few spectators came to Berlin's Grunewald, where 800 tickets can be sold per day.
Bautista Agut meets Italian Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals. Dominic Thiem from Austria, who is third in the world rankings, is already in the other semi-final. His opponent is either talent Jannik Sinner from Italy or Tommy Haas, who makes a short comeback at the age of 42.
For women, Julia Görges still play against Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia and Andrea Petkovic against two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic. Ukrainian Jelina Switolina and Dutch Kiki Bertens are set for the semi-finals. From Friday there will be another three-day tournament, then in a hangar of the former Tempelhof airport.
