At least 21 people died on Tuesday after a bus unexpectedly entered a water reservoir in southwest China. Sixteen others were injured.

The accident occurred in Anshun, a city in Guizhou Province. The circumstances of the incident are still being investigated.

Images in local media show that the bus initially drove at moderate speed on the asphalt. The bus suddenly turned left from the right-most lane and crossed five other lanes before the vehicle got into the water.

It is currently unclear exactly how many people were on the bus. According to local media, at least one student was killed in the accident. It is not known whether more students were injured.

There were several students on the bus who were on their way to the place where they would take the gaokao, the university entrance exam.
