The number of victims of severe storms in southwestern Japan has continued to increase. As the Japanese television channel NHK reported on Sunday, at least 16 people died. Another 17 people in Kumamoto province were diagnosed with “cardiac and respiratory arrest”.

This is a phrase often used in Japan before people's death is officially confirmed. 13 people were still missing. Meanwhile, the salvage work continued. Massive rain had caused severe flooding and landslides in large areas of Kumamoto and Kagoshima provinces on Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu.
