Maria Huntington, who became one of the star names in Finnish athletics last year, opened her competition season on Friday night in Oulu.

Huntington, 23, who also competed in the Doha World Championships last autumn, took part in the hurdles and long jump at Raati Stadium.

In the quick fences, Huntington was met by his friend Lotta Harala, for whom the competition was the second of the summer season. Both Huntington and Harala represent the Pyrenees of Tampere.

Harala won the first women's fast fencing start of the evening with a time of 13.34. Huntington came in second only two hundredths slower.

Huntington did not participate in the second hurdles of the evening, and Harala won it with a time of 13.36.

Huntington’s record in the quick fences is as tough as 13.09. Harala, on the other hand, did not reach exactly the same as last Saturday in Espoo, when he clocked 13.28.

- Now the season is open and it's ok. In the real ones I stayed in the racks and there were a few bumps, but compared to that, the time was just fine, Huntington repeated on his Instagram account.

In the evening in Oulu, Huntington was number one in the long jump with a result of 641. However, the headwind was briskly too much for a statistically significant result. The flat series accommodated five approved jumps, of which the weakest carried 619.

Huntington’s longest jump in statistical wind was 633, the domestic top result of the summer.

Huntington's length record is 644.

"The result was good in the long run, but there was so much wind that it seemed that there was no easy effort," Huntington said.

- You shouldn't expect too much from the first race, but then always wait to run or jump right away to record. Quite a good start and continues on Wednesday in Jyväskylä.

Huntingo will compete next time on Wednesday, when the first Motonet GP of the summer will be held in Jyväskylä. Huntingon participates in 3 matches in Jyväskylä (100 m fences, height and 200 m).

In the women's pole vault, Elina Lampela reached nine cents on Friday with a record of 441.

Aaron Kangas, a hammer thrower with a hard record of 77.09 at the beginning of June, won in Oulu with a valid result of 74.90.

The last race of the evening, the men’s 200 meters, was won by Samuel Purola. He missed his record by three tenths with a time of 21.04.
