Madrid (dpa) - Because of the ongoing corona crisis, the finals in the Davis Cup and Fed Cup will not take place this year. Both events will be moved into the coming year, as the ITF World Tennis Association announced.

"We are convinced that in these extraordinary times this is the right decision to ensure the health of everyone involved," said ITF boss David Haggerty.

The women's final round was supposed to take place in Budapest in April, but was postponed indefinitely in March due to the pandemic. Now the complete cancellation for the first planned Fed Cup format with twelve teams followed.

Germany qualified with a win in Brazil and will now be there from April 13th to 18th, 2021. «We were all really looking forward to the finals and would have loved to play in Budapest this year. In the end, the cancellation for 2020 is probably the right decision. Everything is different this year, ”said Barbara Rittner, head of the German Tennis Federation.

The Davis Cup final took place last year with 18 teams in Madrid for the first time. After long deliberations, the organizers around football star Gerard Piqué decided to cancel the event this year. "It is a great disappointment for all of us," said Piqué, who is hosting the event with his investment company Kosmos. "But we do not know how the situation in the individual countries is developing and it is also impossible to predict what the situation will be like in Madrid in November."

Piqué and Kosmos want to stick to the actual commitment to the Davis Cup. Kosmos had offered the world association $ 3 billion over a 25-year period to maintain the rights to the competition. After the first edition in 2019, there had been criticism of the few viewers of games without Spanish participation.

Germany was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 2019. This year, too, the DTB selection would have been there after a first round win against Belarus. The team of national coach Michael Kohlmann is now automatically qualified for the final tournament from November 22nd to 28th, 2021.
