Kari Aalto, 44, is known as the singer and lyricist of the Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivä band. The punk band representing Finland at Eurovision 2015 ended its activities more than three years ago, and now Kari Aalto is back with a new band and album.

The music style has changed. Kari Aalto & Rastakarai's debut album Summer Is Fun Fun Fun plays a relaxed reggae.

- I had to start doing something after Pertti Kurika's Name Days. I like reggae because it is calm and message-like music, Aalto tells IS.

He lists Jamaican rhythmic music Casually and declares legends as his own favorites. Peter Tosh and Bob Marley & Wailers reportedly play hard on Aalto's steroids.

What is the message of Kari Aalto & Rastakarai?

- Peace and love! Must be calm and love other people, he replies.

In the first half of the last decade, Pertti Kurika's name days made Aalto an internationally known artist.

The message of love, peace and a relaxed summer meining is announced on the new record. The names of the songs tell a rare amount about their content: Love and Peace, Picnic, and Saba-daba Duba-daba.

But just like the well-known masters of reggae, Kari Aalto also has a longing in his songs. Lemmy on Heaven is a tribute to the legendary soloist of the band Motörhead, Lemmy Kilmister, who died in December 2015. Goodbye is a song about Matti Nykänen.

Great pilot

without wings

Goodbye

I remember Sua

Goodbye

---

We heard with Sirkka

it's in the news

the eagle flies

in the cloudy heavens

You're waiting for Elvis

I know that

(Goodbye, Kari Aalto)

Aalto regrets the death of his two heroes.

- Motörhead was a good band. Matti was a hill jumper, and so after his hill jumping career, he also became a relaxed musician.

The corona pandemic disrupted Kari Aalto's plans. Dreadlocks had to do gigs in the spring and tour festivals in the summer. In addition, the day work of the singer at risk was interrupted for a couple of months.

- I've been himassa, chillout and see some friends.

In early June, he was able to return to work.

- Should also start training for late summer gigs. As long as this Corona is obtained from below, a few gigs will be made. A sad setback that Korona has, but luckily it has been overcome - and has remained healthy.

The Rastakarai ensemble has a total of eight members. So live is going to have as plush reggae sound as Rastakarai's album.

- I hope that the audience will come to our gigs with good and relaxed spirit.

However, the English-language record of Pertti Kurika's Name Days is still coming, Aalto reveals.

In the first half of the last decade, Pertti Kurika's name days made Aalto an internationally known artist. In addition to the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria, there were enough exports, and the band, which originated in the Lantern Association's art workshop for the mentally handicapped, performed in the United States, Germany, Canada, Kosovo, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway and Britain.

- It was quite an experience. As a child, I didn't even dream of any music career, Aalto says now.

In time, he began playing a hobby inspired by his brothers. The first instrument was drums, in addition to sound coming from bass and keyboards. Aalto still plans to learn to master the guitar.

Aalto has good memories of Eurovision, Vienna and the entire career of the Pertti Kurika Name Days. However, he hopes that with Rastakarai, inquiries about the old punk band will decrease.

- Sometimes it's nervous when people come to say the same things. "Get back!" "Make another record!"

However, the English-language record of Pertti Kurika's Name Days is still coming, Aalto reveals.

- Some Ramones manager or principal wanted us to make an English-language record for the Yankees. I just have a hard time writing the lyrics in English, Aalto says.

The album will feature translations of the band's best Finnish songs.

- Yes, it will be done at some point. A few songs have already been made in English. That, too, is a little in the middle because of this corona.

Kari Aalto & Rastakarai's album Summer Is Fun Fun Fun will be released today, Friday.
