Rüsselsheim (dpa) - The car manufacturer Opel will focus on the vehicle production in its main plant in Rüsselsheim and will soon build three models there.
From summer 2021, a new model of the PSA premium brand DS Automobiles will be produced in Hesse, the manufacturer belonging to the French PSA group announced on Tuesday. The Insignia limousine is currently rolling off the assembly line in the plant with 2400 employees (as of the end of 2019), and the next generation of the small Astra will be added at the end of 2021.
"The investment will strengthen vehicle production at the Rüsselsheim location in the long term with an expanded product range," emphasized Opel boss Michael Lohscheller. The investment sum is said to be in the millions. Opel relies heavily on electromobility.
At the same time, according to company information, it is planned to "let the construction of transmissions and forgings in the Rüsselsheim plant" expire in 2021 ". Around 200 employees are still working in these areas. The management now wants to start discussions with the social partners. An exclusion of operational redundancies is generally agreed until mid-2025.
