Italian racing swimmers Fabio Lombini, 22, and Gioele Rossetti, 23, died on Sunday when an ultralight plane crashed and caught fire after takeoff.
The Italian Swimming Association FIN confirmed the death of the swimmers. The accident happened in Nettuno, about 60 kilometers from Rome. According to the swimming association, apparently Rossetti was in control of the plane.
Specializing in the 200-meter freestyle, Lombini participated in his career at the Summer Universiade 2017, among others. In the same year, he placed silver at the Italian Championships and reached the finals at the European Short Track Championships in Copenhagen. Rossett had a successful junior career.
