There are various instructions on the Internet on how to make a face mask yourself to curb the coronavirus epidemic.

The website of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health states that a face mask can be used to reduce the spread of drops caused by coughing and sneezing and thus protect others. However, the face mask does not protect the wearer from the coronavirus.

The face mask should be used in situations where it is not possible to avoid close contact, such as in shops and public transport.

However, homemade masks have their own risks, and for this reason the National Institute of Occupational Health has compiled instructions on how to make and use corona protection on its website. Namely, a dirty mask can be a vector of the virus.

  • In the video above, you can see a tutorial video made by the city of Heinola on how to make a face mask. This model is recommended by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health on its own website.

The Department of Occupational Health recommends making the mask from a thin cloth so that it does not become too tight. In the opinion of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, a multilayer material is usually better than a single layer.

The fabric must be permeable enough to be used. If you feel unwell during use of the mask, it may be caused by excessive carbon dioxide inside the mask. The mask is then too tight.

You should choose a fabric that can be washed at high temperatures many times. The face mask should cover the mouth and nose. It is important that the mask stays well on the face. If you wish, you can also make a disposable mask for which kitchen paper is suitable as a material.

Above all, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health reminds you of the correct use of the mask. Wash your hands before putting on a clean mask. When using the mask, do not touch it. Do not drink or eat while wearing the mask. Remove the mask by just grabbing it from behind. Do not touch the outside of the mask.

After using the mask, hands should be washed and a cloth face mask should be washed with a 90 degree wash program. It can also be boiled for 5 minutes in water with a little detergent. The mask should be dried and rinsed.
