The number of new deaths from the coronavirus (115) was less than a week earlier on Friday, according to the daily COVID-19 update by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The number of new hospital admissions on Friday is significantly smaller at 225 than last Friday (502).

The new figures from RIVM do not relate to the actual number of hospital admissions and deaths: these are only reports that have been received by the institute, and there is a delay in this.

The number of confirmed infections rose again, to 23,097. Since Thursday, 1,335 confirmed infections have been reported to RIVM. Nearly a quarter of all COVID-19 patients reported to date come from North Brabant. The number of reports in the north of the Netherlands is stable.

A quarter of corona patients are health care workers

RIVM also looked at the degree of contamination among health care workers. Nationally, 24 percent of confirmed COVID-19 patients are health care workers. However, the distribution differs greatly per region; in North Brabant, for example, 11 percent of patients are healthcare employees and that percentage in Groningen is 56.

Since April 6, more is being tested. This increase in the number of tests is primarily intended for healthcare workers outside the hospital, such as GPs, nursing home employees, disabled care workers and home care workers.

Total number of deaths may be twice as high

Figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) also show that the total number of deaths may be twice as high as RIVM has reported so far.

Statistics Netherlands keeps track of the total number of deaths per week and compares this with the average number of deaths in the first ten weeks of this year. This excess mortality amounted to approximately 2,000 deaths last week. About a thousand of those deaths were registered by RIVM.

It should be noted that Statistics Netherlands does not provide information about the cause of death. It is therefore not possible to say with certainty that the excess mortality is entirely due to the coronavirus.

Just like a flu wave, RIVM ultimately focuses mainly on the figures for excess mortality. The daily update is, however, important for the statistics and contains the figures of the number of deaths of those who are sure that they were infected with the corona virus.
