Tel Aviv / Gaza (dpa) - The conflict between Israel and militant Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continues to heat up.
After further attacks with bullets and explosive balloons from the Palestinian Territory, Israeli fighter jets again targeted targets in the north of the coast, the military said at night.
These were "terrorist targets" for Hamas in the Gaza Strip, including "underground infrastructure".
On Saturday evening, militant Palestinians fired a missile at Israel while ex-military chief Benny Gantz from the Blue and White Center Alliance visited the border area. The situation only worsens a month before the next parliamentary election in Israel. Israeli television reported on Sunday that Israel's army is preparing for a possible major escalation.
The attacks from the Gaza Strip and Israel's counterattacks have been going on for days. In response, Israel has stopped the import of cement into the coastal strip and has suspended entry permits for 500 business people from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli media reported.
Israel tightened a blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007, which Egypt now supports. Both countries justify the measure with security considerations. Around two million inhabitants live in very bad conditions in the coastal strip. Palestinians regularly protest the blockade.
Hamas is classified by Israel, the United States and the EU as a terrorist organization. It is committed to the destruction of Israel. There are repeated confrontations between Israel and militant Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Negotiators from Egypt and the United Nations regularly work to calm the situation.
