The news about the corona virus is making some people worried. Through our NUjij response platform and the NU.nl mailbox, among other things, many questions and reactions from concerned readers come in. Do you have to worry? The answers below.

I am going on vacation to Argentina / Indonesia / the Philippines / another country soon. Is that dangerous?

No. "There is an outbreak in China, but not in the rest of the world," said a RIVM spokesperson. "In other countries there are only import cases: suppose an infected person flies from the Wuhan region in China to, for example, Canada, that does not mean that the virus is immediately circulating in Canada." (Possible) infected patients are kept in quarantine to prevent this.

So you can go on holiday very well. Only a trip to the Chinese province of Hubei is discouraged.

Do I have to take precautions if I fly to Argentina / Indonesia / the Philippines / another country? Do I have to wear a mouth cap on the plane, or wash my hands more often?

No. Everyone with a coronavirus diagnosis is in quarantine and (fifteen) cities with the most risks have flat traffic. The chance that you will step into the device with an infected person is therefore extremely small. Moreover, the reputation of aircraft ventilation as a spreader of disease is not entirely justified, scientists discovered in 2018.

So many countries have already been infected! China, the USA, Vietnam, Canada, France, many other countries ...

It is true that the virus has surfaced in more than ten countries. But the fact that a virus appears in a country does not mean that it is spreading further , as explained in the answer to the first question. In all countries except China, the number of infections can still be counted on one hand.

Wasn't that patient in France also in the Netherlands?

No. The French health organization had reported that, but the information turned out to be incorrect, according to the RIVM.

I have ordered something in the Chinese webshop Alibaba. Can a contaminated packer pass on the virus to me via the package?

No, according to the RIVM. "Coronaviruses spread through humans and animals. They cannot survive well outside the body. Certainly not on cardboard, packaging or other items." And there is no reason to think that this corona virus is an exception.

On video clips I see all crying nurses, dead people and patients who have died on the street. Does China not keep all kinds of information under the cap?

Unfortunately, only China can answer that question. However, the experts we interviewed have so far been positively surprised about how China is dealing with the epidemic. And the movies? In most there is no evidence that it is really the corona virus. They may be correct, but they would also be old images of a completely different situation, for example. You do not know.

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not regard this as an international health crisis. As a result, countries do not have to work together. But what if the epidemic suddenly gets much worse?

The WHO does not yet call it an international health crisis because it is primarily a Chinese problem. That doesn't mean she pulls her hands off. The organization keeps a close eye on the situation in China and the rest of the world. If necessary, the WHO can still scale up.
