Sources within the US government suspect that the Ukrainian plane crashed in Iran was accidentally shot down by an Iranian rocket. US satellites would have detected two rockets just before the crash.
The Pentagon refuses to respond to the statements. US President Donald Trump says on Thursday that the crash may have been a mistake, but did not provide further details.
The Boeing 737-800 of Ukraine International Airlines crashed in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, shortly after it left the airport in Tehran. All 176 passengers were killed. Among them are residents of Iran, Ukraine and Canada.
Iran is currently investigating the crash. A first report, which was published on Thursday morning, states that the crash may have been caused by a technical defect. However, the Ukrainian authorities want to conduct their own investigation.
Ukraine takes into account other scenarios, including a Russian rocket attack. The country therefore wants to look for rocket remains at the site of the crash. The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky says to be in consultation with the Iranian government about conducting his own investigations.
