In an accident with a police car in Riethoven in Brabant, a motorist was killed in the night from Sunday to Monday. The man was driving a vehicle he had stolen in Waalre shortly before and was spotted by agents shortly afterwards.
The police report on Twitter that after reporting the car theft, officers got the vehicle in their sights and went after it. After a bend, however, the man would have stood still in the middle of the road and the collision could no longer be prevented.
Hours later, a trail investigation showed that the man, out of sight of the officers, had hit a tree and was rolling back on the road. Agents were then unable to prevent a collision, as a result of which the man was launched from the car.
The rushed agents tried to resuscitate him, but their attempts were no longer to their advantage. The police suspect that the first collision with the tree had already killed the man. It is not clear how the agents themselves are.
According to the National Criminal Investigation Protocol, a team of traffic specialists from another police unit is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
