Essen / Hamburg (dpa) - The department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof takes over the sports retailer Sport Check from the Otto Group.

With the takeover of the 17 branches and the online shop of Sport Scheck, Karstadt Kaufhof is significantly expanding its position in the growth market of sports, emphasized Group CEO Stephan Fanderl. For the purchase price, the companies gave no information. Earlier, the Handelsblatt reported on the deal.

"We are leaders in the growth business of sports and will once again significantly expand our already strong presence with the acquisition of Sport-Check in German city centers," said Fanderl. The customer base will be significantly expanded by the acquisition and expanded the omni-channel offer.

Sport Check has been fighting for years with red numbers. The parent company Otto had therefore put the company for sale. The takeover by Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof gave Sport Check "the best chance for a sustainable perspective," emphasized the retail giant. Because this creates one of the largest players in the sporting goods trade. So far, Sport Check has lacked the necessary clout and size to prevail in the tough competition against online retailers and discount providers.

Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof already has a strong foothold in the inner cities with the sports departments in the department stores and the Karstadt Sports branches. Just recently, the company opened new sports stores in Bonn, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Wiesbaden and Lübeck.

However, the takeover is still subject to the approval of the competent bodies and the antitrust authorities.
