Wiesbaden (dpa) - craft businesses in Germany have made good business in the third quarter. Turnover by skilled trades requiring authorization rose by 5.2 percent from July to the end of September compared to the same period in the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
In all business groups, the proceeds rose. The largest growth was achieved by the automotive industry (7.7 percent). A plus of more than 5 per cent also recorded the health industry, the life and the construction industry.
Nevertheless, the total number of employees fell slightly by 0.2 percent. There was a decline in craft trades for private use (minus 2.6 percent), which included, for example, hairdressers and stonemasons. In the food industry, the number of employees fell by 2.0 percent. At the end of September 2019, however, the other five trade groups employed slightly more people than one year before.
Absolute figures, how many people in Germany work in craft enterprises, the Federal Office does not have in this context. In the last survey for the year 2017, the Wiesbaden authority counted around 4.2 million employees in approximately 440,000 companies in the craft sector subject to a license.
