A big fire is raging in the Good Shepherd Church in Hoogmade in South Holland. In connection with 'danger of falling', houses around the church are being evacuated, reports the fire department.

The fire started around 12.40 pm. A large part of the roof has since collapsed and a tower of the church has collapsed in the flames. The fire brigade has since given up the church.

Emergency services are currently in large numbers to get the situation under control. The fire department is asking people not to approach the fire.

Repair work was in progress in the Roman Catholic Church. The fire brigade reports that the fire started with the burning of paint.

In addition to a few homes, a school has also been evacuated. An NL Alert has also been sent for Hoogmade and its surroundings. The fire department asks people to close the windows and doors and to stay out of the smoke.
