Brexit: John le Carré wants to remain an EU citizen with an Irish passport

TIME ONLINE | News, backgrounds and debates

London (AP) - British writer John Le Carré (88) has applied for an Irish passport to remain a Brexit EU citizen.

His paternal grandmother was born in Ireland, which gives him the right to Irish citizenship, said le Carré of the German Press Agency. "For the first time in my life, I thought about living somewhere else."

In his new novel "Badminton", which will be released on Tuesday, le Carré has his characters condemn Brexit as "shitty chaos". He himself sharply criticizes Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who must be "stopped immediately". "There is no more logic in Johnson's shouting." The Brexit opponents would not have been able to validate themselves.

"We have learned how fragile our institutions and our democracy are - and the fact that we have no written constitution is scary."
