Paris (AP) - Emanuel Buchmann can look forward to the Tour de France 2020.
The 107th Tour of France will also be a matter for the strong-climbing cyclists and will therefore suit the German mountain specialist and this year's overall fourth as well as the Colombian defending champion Egan Bernal and his Ineos team-mate Chris Froome.
A total of four mountain arrivals, 29 classified mountains and numerous vertical meters are on the stage plan of the upcoming Tour of France from 27 June to 15 July, as tour chief Christian Prudhomme announced at the route presentation on Tuesday in Paris. "It's the toughest track I've seen in recent years," said four-time overall winner Froome in Paris.
"From the tour start in Nice to the finishing straight on the Champs-Élysées, the battlegrounds that have been the scene of battle have never been so diversified," Prudhomme said. With only one time trial, the Tour 2020 is waiting - and this too ends one day before the final showdown in Paris in height. A total of eight of the 21 sections were classified by mountain tour operators ASO as mountain stages.
After this year's Grand Départ in the Belgian capital Brussels, the Tour 2020 will be back in its native climes in Nice and will not leave France. For the 37th time in its history, the "Grande Schleife" stops in the port city on the French Riviera - for the second time since 1981 with the start of the most important cycling race in the world.
If on the first day in Nice the sprinters still have the chance to win a stage and thus hope for the first yellow jersey, the next day the climbers will be in demand. The tour then travels through the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Jura and the Vosges Mountains - and thus through the five important mountain ranges of the "Grande Nation".
The decision on the overall winner falls on the penultimate stage, which ends with a 36-kilometer and at the same time time trial on the La Planche des Belle Filles in 1035 meters.
