The Greek police arrested a 65-year-old Lebanese on the Greek island of Mykonos on Saturday at the request of the German authorities. According to police, the man is suspected of hijacking an aircraft and the murder of an American Marine in 1985.
According to various Greek media, the man was involved in the hijacking on 14 June 1985 of an aircraft of the American airline TWA.
An American marine was shot at that hijacking. The plane was with 153 passengers en route from the Egyptian capital Cairo to the American San Diego with stops in Athens, Rome, Boston and Los Angeles. It was hijacked after it left Athens.
The hijackers demanded the release of seven hundred Shiite prisoners from Israeli detention. The captain was then forced to fly to the Lebanese capital Beirut. There the American was subsequently shot.
The hijackers held 39 American hostages
The hijackers held 39 American hostages for seventeen days. The hostages were released after Israel accepted the hijackers' demand for the release of prisoners imprisoned during fighting in southern Lebanon.
One of the hijackers, Lebanese Mohammed Ali Hamadi, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1989 by a German court for murder and hijacking of the plane. He admitted at the time that he and a partner had hijacked the plane. He denied that he had killed the Marine. According to him, his partner would have done that.
