Kretschmann has governed Baden-Württemberg since 2011. In his first term in office, he led a coalition with the SPD, since 2016, the CDU is his coalition partner. In the run-up to his announcement was speculated about whether the 71-year-old will compete again. Cem Özdemir, who applies for the parliamentary fraction in the Bundestag, was also considered as a possible candidate.
