Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) wants to compete in the state election in 2021 again. This announced the state association of the Greens via Twitter. Kretschmann had said before the summer vacation to make his decision public until the state party congress on September 21 and 22.

His application for a third term as Prime Minister Kretschmann explained in a "letter to the citizens". There he addressed topics such as digitization, emission-free driving, education and climate neutrality. He also promised that 2020 would "not be spent on campaigning".

Kretschmann has governed Baden-Württemberg since 2011. In his first term in office, he led a coalition with the SPD, since 2016, the CDU is his coalition partner. In the run-up to his announcement was speculated about whether the 71-year-old will compete again. Cem Özdemir, who applies for the parliamentary fraction in the Bundestag, was also considered as a possible candidate.
