Former PvdA leader Diederik Samsom will be the new chief of cabinet for European Commissioner Frans Timmermans (PvdA), de Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.
Tuesday it was announced that Timmermans will be responsible for climate policy in the European Commission.
The PvdA member just recently seized the presidency of the European Commission, but will be the first vice president to shape European climate policy.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has renamed climate policy into the European Green Deal, with the aim of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent.
That makes Timmermans one of the most powerful politicians in Europe, Politico concluded earlier. As chief of cabinet, Samsom becomes Timmermans' political right-hand man.
Samson as head of climate table involved in climate agreement
Samsom was the leader of the PvdA from 2012 to 2016 and from 2003 became a member of the House of Representatives. In 2016, he lost the leader's battle with Lodewijk Asscher, after which he disappeared from the political scene.
In recent months, as head of the 'Built Environment' Climate Table, he was involved in the drafting of the Climate Agreement.
