Venice (AP) - The Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival goes to the psycho thriller "Joker" by the American Todd Phillips. The comics-inspired work tells how a mentally ill man turns the villain into a joker - the antagonist of Batman. The 44-year-old Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead role.

The Golden Lion recently went to a US production two years ago: in 2017, "The Shape of Water" by Guillermo del Toro won the Festival's highest accolade.

The second most important prize of the festival, the Jury Grand Prix, went to «J'accuse» by Roman Polanski. The 86-year-old Oscar winner tells of the Dreyfus Affair, which led to a judicial scandal in France in the 1890s.
