Munich / Saitama (dpa) - One and a half weeks before the start of the World Cup in China, the German basketball players start for further preparation to Asia. From Munich, the team of national coach Henrik Rödl flies confidently to Tokyo on Wednesday afternoon.
"We've taken a lot of valuable information from the Supercup and a lot makes us confident," said Rödl in view of the title win at the traditional tournament last weekend in Hamburg with victories over Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland. "But we are not done yet."
Two more tests against Tunisia on Friday and Japan on Saturday are on the program for the team around NBA star Dennis Schröder in Saitama near the Japanese capital. "We have not played the big opponents yet - like France, Australia, Canada, Lithuania, with whom we have to compete in group stage one and hopefully two," said Rödl.
At the dress rehearsal in Jiangmen on August 28th, the duel with Australia will be against a co-favorite. In the preliminary round of the World Cup in China (31 August - 15 September) Germany meets France, the Dominican Republic and Jordan.
After the Supercup national coach Henrik Rödl had the NBA youngster Moritz Wagner deleted from the provisional World Cup squad. Before the trip from Japan to the first World Cup venue in Shenzhen, China, the final twelve-man squad will be named, but one player has to leave. Captain Robin Benzing had completely abandoned the Supercup due to a slight knee injury. "If the World Cup had started, he would have played," said Rödl.
