India is creating a new function within the defense apparatus that should improve coordination between the army, the navy and the air force. That is what Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday during his speech on Indian Independence Day. Pakistan accused India on Wednesday of preparing a military operation in Pakistani-Kashmir.
Modi calls the announcement of a Chief of Defense Staff a "big decision". "Our forces are the pride of India and this appointment ensures that coordination will be tightened," said the president.
According to India Today , the new official will be head of the armed forces and will advise the Indian government. Until now, coordination was done by a senior official within the Ministry of Defense.
Defense specialists and veterans have long wanted such a position after a government commission advised it in 1999. India was close to a war with Pakistan after a dispute over Kashmir. A lot has been said about Indian politics in the last twenty years, but there has never been a consensus.
Today India celebrates the independence of the British empire, this year 72 years ago. In his speech, Prime Minister Modi explained once again why India withdrew part of the constitution two weeks ago. It states that the state of Kashmir and Jammu has more autonomy than other states in the country.
According to Modi, he did that because the special status encouraged corruption and nepotism. The rights of women, children and minority groups would also be endangered. In Kashmir and Jammu, the majority of the population is Muslim.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has accused India on Wednesday of preparing a military operation in Pakistani-Kashmir.
Khan made that allegation during a speech on the occasion of Pakistani Independence Day. The Prime Minister traveled to Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad-Kashmir. This is the part of Kashmir that is in Pakistani hands.
