Verdict expected: The case of Asap Rocky is nearing completion

Stockholm (dpa) - One and a half months after a violent incident in Stockholm falls in Sweden, the verdict in the trial of the American musician Asap Rocky. The district court of Stockholm announces its decision on Wednesday (2:00 pm).

The rapper ("Praise the Lord") and two of his companions were tried for personal injury in court for beating up a young man in Stockholm at the end of June. US President Donald Trump and several celebrities had turned on the case.

Asap Rocky and his companions were in pre-trial detention for four weeks because of the incident. Celebrities such as reality TV star Kim Kardashian and pop singer Justin Bieber had sided with the 30-year-old and demanded his release. Not least Trump had the Swedish action against his compatriot on the palm brought: Via Twitter, he criticized the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. His inability to act in the case had very disappointed him, so Trump. Löfven coolly referred to the independence of the Swedish judiciary.

During a trial lasting several days two weeks ago, the defendants admitted having beaten and kicked a 19-year-old. They said they had felt threatened by the man and acted in self-defense. The prosecutor demanded up to six months in prison for the defendants. After negotiation, however, they were released and traveled back to the US.

For the verdict they do not have to be on site, as a court spokeswoman said in advance the German Press Agency. It is therefore questionable whether they will take the non-obligatory route from the United States to Scandinavia.

Asap Rocky, whose civil name is Rakim Mayer, had thanked his fans and supporters in his first Instagram message after the release. He repeated this thanks at his first concert since returning from Sweden. "I'm so happy to be here. It was a scary and humiliating experience, but I'm here, "he said during a Sunday night gig at a festival in Anaheim, California. He added: "You must continue to pray for me." He hoped not to go back behind bars.
