American multi-millionaire Jeffrey Epstein, suspected of child abuse, has put an end to his life in jail, US authorities confirm. Epstein was under stricter supervision after a presumably earlier suicide attempt, but the extra security had already been withdrawn, various American media write.

He was then found unconscious in his cell. Until "sometime this week" he was extra watched in prison.

The multi-millionaire was accused of abusing dozens of underage girls between 2002 and 2005. Child pornography was found in his home in New York, for which he was given 45 years in prison. His trial would start in June 2020.

The American was arrested in early July and has been detained ever since. He suggested waiting for his trial under house arrest in his New York home and said he was willing to pay for the security himself, but the judge had refused that request.

Epstein more often accused of abuse

Epstein has been accused of abuse several times in the last twenty years. The US prosecutor (OM) came up with a list of charges against him in 2007. He is said to have paid dozens of underage girls for sex.

The case at the time was mainly based on witness statements from women who claimed to have fallen victim to Epstein. He risked a life sentence, but managed to make a striking deal with the prosecutors.

The prosecutors were led by Alexander Acosta, former employment minister. He resigned last month because of this settlement.

The American channel Lifetime is working on a new series of the Emmy nominated documentary series Surviving R. Kelly . In the Surviving Jeffrey Epstein episode, investigations will be conducted into the alleged crimes committed by the multi-millionaire.
