Paris (dpa) - France's most famous coma patient is dead. After stopping treatment more than a week ago, 42-year-old Vincent Lambert died, as his nephew François Lambert told the public broadcaster France Télévisions.
Other media in France also reported the case. Previously, there had been a dramatic legal tug-of-war over the cessation of the artificial diet. The tragic case has not only torn Lambert's family, but also split France.
Lambert died in a traffic accident about ten years ago and had a bad head injury. He had been in a kind of coma since then. The Catholic parents wanted to prevent the death of their son with all their might and complained. They failed repeatedly in France in court and also before the European Court of Human Rights. Lambert's wife insisted that her husband die.
Recently, after a grueling lawsuit, France's supreme court cleared the way for another stop to Lambert's treatment. Only in May had his treatment been stopped. However, a few hours later, a French appellate court ordered the reopening. On Monday, Lamberts parents announced that they would not continue legal action against the treatment stop.
