The very large fire that broke out Thursday Thursday afternoon at an industrial estate on the Nijverheidsweg in Nijmegen is under control. The fire brigade reported that around 19.45 hours they still needed a few hours for re-firing.
Several fire fighting vehicles are on the spot. A fire extinguisher was also used to fight the fire from the nearby water.
In connection with smoke development, the Gelderland-Zuid safety region sent an NL alert twice to people in the center of Nijmegen and the surrounding area. People who were troubled by the smoke were advised to seek fresh air, close windows and doors and switch off the (car) ventilation.
According to the fire brigade, the fire did not cause any nuisance in nearby Goffertpark, where thousands of people attend a Phil Collins performance on Thursday evening.
Fire started outside in a store
The fire started on the site of a metalworking company. Research by the fire brigade shows that no harmful substances have been released.
The cause of the fire is as yet unknown, a fire department spokesperson told NU.nl when asked.
