Bongo, who has been in Morocco since October, appointed Julien Nkoghe Bekale as prime minister by decree. Bekale is the former Minister of Labor.

A group of soldiers occupied the headquarters of the state broadcaster for some time on Monday and announced that they wanted to "save a democracy in danger".

The police intervened and captured seven coup plotters, two others were killed.
