The split between André Hazes and Monique Westenberg is "this time really final", writes the folk singer in a statement on Instagram on Wednesday evening.

The 27-year-old singer emphasizes that he currently has no other relationship, but that he does find a lot of support from 25-year-old influencer Sarah van Soelen.

"I cannot rule out the possibility that more could arise from this in the future."

It is the first time that Hazes reacts to his breakup.

He explains that he broke up because he wanted to live up to Westenberg's expectations.

The singer does not say what those expectations were.

"It has led to a split a number of times, which is now really final. At the beginning of this year it became clear to me that it just doesn't work between us anymore."

Hazes writes on Instagram that during "all the ups and downs" he was regularly taken care of by the van Soelen family.

"Especially when I was through it. I also became very good friends with Sarah and although we felt a strong connection at the time, it remained friendship."

The singer emphasizes that he has no relationship with the 25-year-old influencer, who has more than 30,000 followers on Instagram.

"At the moment I get from the family and her especially the support I need."

The singer's management confirmed on Wednesday that Hazes and Westenberg had broken their engagement.

In December, the

singer proposed to Westenberg.

The two had been in a relationship since 2014 and had a son in 2016.

At the end of 2019, the couple had already split up when Hazes had a relationship with Bridget Maasland for several months.

Hazes has recently found a lot of support from Sarah van Soelen.

He emphasizes that they are still friends now, but that he does not rule out that more will be created in the future.

'I will not abandon my son'

Hazes further writes in his statement that he will not abandon his son with the breakup.

"The end of a relationship between two people does not mean the end of the relationship between a father and his son. I cherish that very much and I will do everything I can to maintain the fantastic relationship with André."

The singer and presenter regrets that the news of the breakup came so quickly in the media.

"Unfortunately I was not given the opportunity to tell my son in peace."

Westenberg wrote on Instagram on Wednesday evening that she did not see the breakup with Hazes coming.

According to her, they had the happiest year of their entire relationship last year.

"André's choice to leave us is abrupt for me and I didn't see it coming."

"It takes a lot of strength from me to be able to give it a place without being able to give it a place myself, to remain upright in this hectic pace. (...) I wish for André peace of mind and heart so that space is created within for his patterns and being unhappy with that, to be able to break through ", Westenberg concludes.
