R. Kelly's request for leave because of the coronavirus outbreak was declined, Variety reports Tuesday. The 53-year-old singer wanted to leave the cell temporarily, because he is concerned about his health.
Kelly is detained at the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he awaits his trials. He is suspected of extortion and sexual misconduct, among other things.
On March 26, Kelly's lawyers applied for leave. He cited his age and recent surgery as risk factors that predispose him to the coronavirus.
Judge Ann Donnelly, however, rejected the request. "The suspect is currently in custody because of the risk that he could flee or attempt to hinder, threaten or intimidate future witnesses," Donnelly wrote in the statement. "The defendant has not been able to explain that those risks no longer exist."
She added, according to Page Six , "While I understand the defendant's fear of the coronavirus, he has not identified compelling reasons to justify his release."
