"Of Lions and Lambs": coastal fog

Is there anything sadder than a bathing resort thinned to happiness in the cold and wet February? Benita Suchodrev's photographs from Blackpool show: not much.

Perhaps this is the curse of places by the sea: they are never as idyllic as you imagine. The gap between desire and reality creates a slight sadness, it obscures the viewer's gaze. Especially in Blackpool. Especially in February. Berlin-based Benita Suchodrev deliberately came in winter to take the photographs for her illustrated book "Of Lions and Lambs" . The hazy light, the thrown sea, the early darkness, all corresponded to her feeling of the seaside resort on the west coast of England, which she had already portrayed in the summer. Suchodrev's new pictures do not look colder, on the contrary, the low outside temperatures show even more with which warmer she has approached people. Especially for those for whom Blackpool's ubiquitous promise of happiness has so far not been fulfilled. There are not a few.
